RANGELEY — Lakeside Theater, Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center and the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts will rock to the traditional songs and tunes of Scotland and Ireland the last week of June.

The Paul McKenna Band, a top-rated Scottish touring band, will bring its original songs and tunes to Lakeside Theater on Tuesday June 29, Skye Theatre in Carthage on Wednesday, June 30, and Unity College Center on Thursday, July 1.

Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Lakeside and Skye, and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. There will be a preshow jam session 45 minutes prior to curtain at Skye and Unity.

The Paul McKenna Band, a quintet, has been playing to audiences throughout the United Kingdom since 2006. With a contemporary approach to songs, although not straying too far from its roots, the group’s arrangements are both fresh and innovative. They combine vocals with guitar, bouzouki, fiddle, flute, whistle, bodhran and percussion.

McKenna is a singer and multi-instrumentalist from Glasgow, Scotland. His own music draws from the traditions of Scottish and Irish music, and he blends in modern rock and contemporary songwriting. He is working toward a degree in Scottish music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

David McNee, also from Glasgow and a multi-instrumentalist, favors a contemporary approach but uses traditional instruments such as mandolin and bouzouki to achieve a modern robust sound. He recently produced and was featured on Irish singer Mary Kathleen Burke’s album, “A Song in Her Heart.” He is working with producer and drummer Fergus Mackenzie of the Finlay Macdonald Band on a new album.

Fiddler Ruairidh Macmillan, originally from Nairn in the Scottish Highlands, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Scottish music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2008. He already has had much touring experience; and in February 2009, he was awarded the prestigious title of BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year.

Sean Gray spent the final year of secondary school at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music at Plockton High School in the Western Highlands, where he studied flute and guitar. Over the years, he has played alongside many major acts such as Back of the Moon, Andy Irvine, Shooglenifty, Grada, and The Peatbog Faeries.

Ewan Baird, who comes from a family long involved in the folk scene, plays bodhran and cajon and favors the DADGAD style of guitar.
