PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A Maine nightclub is being sued for not paying royalties to the people who write the songs performed there.
The suit against Empire Dine and Dance in Portland is one of 21 filed against venues across the country by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
The group is seeking $13,280 from Empire.
ASCAP Licensing chief Vincent Candilora says the suit is a last resort. He says Empire has “ignored us for a pretty long period of time.”
Empire co-owner Todd Doyle says he thought they were paying royalties to a different organization. He tells the Portland Press Herald the first time he heard of ASCAP was when he was served with the lawsuit.
Doyle says he’ll work with ASCAP to resolve the dispute.
