LEWISTON — A judge has postponed the trial of a Vermont woman blamed for a July 2009 car crash that killed a Lewiston mother.

Diane Silsby, 42, of Lunenburg, Vt., was scheduled to stand trial this month at Coos County Superior Court in Lancaster, N.H., on three counts of negligent homicide.

Rachel Metivier, 26, of Lewiston and two other people — Silsby’s 83-year-old mother, Leona Dunn, of Lancaster, N.H., formerly of Waterford, and her 15-year-old daughter, Nicole — were killed in the head-on crash that took place on Route 2 in Randolph, N.H.

Police say Silsby was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

On Tuesday, lawyers met in Lancaster for a pretrial conference. On Thursday, a judge granted Silsby’s defense a continuance, postponing the trial until November.

“If it hadn’t been granted, I’d be picking a jury right now,” said Robert Mekeel, county attorney for Coos County.

The Sun Journal was unable to reach Silsby’s lawyer, Mark Sisti.

Mekeel said the defense was still gathering information. Silsby hired a company to reconstruct the tragic accident. Its report is still forthcoming, Mekeel said Friday.

The accident, which occurred July 3, 2009, also hurt four people.

Metivier was a passenger in a 2000 Ford Explorer driven by her fiance, Christopher Caron. Caron, his 3-year-old daughter and Metivier’s 6-year-old son were taken to nearby hospitals and treated.

Silsby was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center after the crash.

Four months later, she was indicted on the homicide charges. In December, she entered a not guilty plea.
