LEWISTON — The first annual Androscoggin County Farm Bike Tour will take place Saturday, Aug. 28. The event, supported by a variety of local partners, will promote the unique agricultural communities in Androscoggin County.

The Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District has convened a group including Healthy Androscoggin, Androscoggin Land Trust, University of Maine Cooperative Extension for Androscoggin and Sagadahoc Counties, as well as the USDA Time and Tide Resource Conservation and Development and Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Two routes will be offered: an approximately 10-mile route for families at a cost of $20 each family and a 50-plus-mile route for the avid biker at a cost of $10 each person.

The owners of the farms will offer the opportunity for the pedaling participants to begin to understand the diversity of agricultural production and see some of Androscoggin County’s most vital farmland.

The goals for the event include: giving an opportunity for physical activity to local families, promoting better health, providing exposure to and education about agriculture’s valued part in Maine’s history and future and building the understanding of the stewardship and conservation needed to keep agriculture sustainable.

Registration for the 50-mile route, which will begin in Sabattus and touch in Lisbon, Durham, East Auburn and Lewiston, will be at 8 a.m. Registration for the 10-mile tour will be at 9 a.m.
