FARMINGTON — Mt. Blue High School boys basketball team members intend to dribble their way to the Wilton Blueberry Festival on Saturday.

A group of eight to 10 players plan to start dribbling a basketball at 6 a.m. from Mt. Blue High School gymnasium down Route 2 through East Wilton to Academy Hill School. There they will make a basket in the gym and one on the playground area then dribble up the Weld Road to join their float in the parade, team co-captain Cam Sennick said.

It’s one of the fundraisers the team has undertaken to keep the freshmen boys basketball coach position, one that faced budget cutbacks, and to support other team programs, he said.

The varsity squad is committed to teamwork and wants to help keep three teams playing at Mt. Blue High School this year.

“It’s a big step to go from eighth grade athletics to junior varsity. Without that stepping stone, we lose our competitive edge,” Sennick said. While he made the leap from eighth grade to junior varsity, the junior co-captain admitted “it was a really big adjustment for me.”

Knowing the difference the freshman team can make, team members are working to raise the necessary funds for this year, he said.

The team is taking pledges for their nearly 10-mile dribble, and members will dribble and walk near their parade float, accepting donations along the parade route.

“What better time to ask for the support from our community than during the Wilton Blueberry Festival?” he said at a recent team barbecue.

“We will be soliciting for sponsors this week and will be dribbling as a team from Mt. Blue High School to Wilton, lining up for the parade and dribbling in the parade,” said fellow co-captain Adam Wiles-Rosell.

Individual pledges may be given by calling Wiles-Rosell at 592-3209; Sennick at 779-4446, or Don Demarsh at 778-4856 and Alan Hart 778-9212, or by contacting a player whom you may know or dropping off your donation in the bucket during the parade.

Pledges and donations will be deposited in a fundraising account at Mt. Blue High School and will assist in defraying the cost of a bus for additional scrimmages and officials for the freshmen basketball program, as well as other needs not funded by the school system and the All Sports Boosters.

A Mt. Blue varsity basketball team car wash will be held Thursday, Aug. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wiles Remembrance Center parking lot, near the Farmington Town Office on Routes 2 & 27 in Farmington. Donations will be accepted.
