STONINGTON, Conn. — Joan Carroll, 78, of Lamberts Lane, passed away Monday, Aug. 9, at the Mystic Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

She was born Feb. 1, 1932, in Yonkers, N.Y., the daughter of the late Norman and Florence (Schroeder) Secord.

She married James H. Carroll on July 2, 1955, in Yonkers N.Y. He survives her.

After successfully raising her family, Joan re-entered the workforce by managing an employment office in New Jersey, and then worked as the town clerk in Madrid for 5 years. She served as the first president of the Madrid Historical Society for 3 years.

During her time as president, she was instrumental in the refurbishing of an old school house in Madrid. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish in Rangely (Oquossoc). While living in Maine, Joan loved snowmobiling, four wheeling and fishing.

In addition to her husband James, she is survived by her son, Kevin J. Carroll and wife, Melanie K. Carroll, of Stonington, Coon.; daughter, Maureen Carroll of Piscataway, N.J.; brothers, Norman (Bud) Secord of Yonkers, N.Y., and Richard Secord of Chappaqua, N.Y.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son, James D. Carroll.
