PARIS — A dispute between neighbors has resulted in a grand jury indicting both men on criminal charges.

Keith T. Brain, 42, and James P. Walsh, 38, were indicted on charges related to two incidents last month. Both live on Moore Road in Brownfield.

Brain is charged with attempted murder and elevated aggravated assault. Walsh is charged with burglary, theft, harassment by telephone and violating conditions of release.

Walsh was arrested on June 28 on charges of domestic assault and domestic terrorizing of his 33-year-old ex-girlfriend, as well as criminal mischief and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Following the incident, the woman moved her belongings into the Brain’s garage.

Walsh’s indictment charges that he entered the garage on July 7, removed several of the woman’s possessions, and threw other items on the ground. Brain’s wife accused Walsh of calling their number several times after his ex-girlfriend went to the garage to help clean it up, and the woman later told Brain’s wife that Walsh had called and threatened to torch the garage.

Brain is charged with shooting Walsh twice on July 10 after a confrontation at Brain’s house. Walsh told police he was returning a car seat belonging to his ex-girlfriend to the Brains’ residence and threw it onto the lawn because he didn’t think it would be visible at the end of the driveway. He said Brain came out of the residence and threatened him with a .357 magnum handgun.

Brain’s wife said she heard five shots after Brain left the residence. Walsh said Brain shot at him as he was dialing 911, and he was hit in the left leg and right elbow. Brain fled into the woods and was arrested almost five hours later when he was spotted coming out of the woods by members of the Maine State Police Tactical Team.
