SABATTUS — An Auburn motorcyclist was transported to an area hospital following a Sunday afternoon crash.

George Hartford, 43, of Auburn, was taken to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston following the 4:45 p.m. crash at the intersection of Sabattus Road and Main Street. As of Sunday evening, he was still being evaluated and was listed in stable condition, according to a spokesman at the hospital.

Lt. Matt Prince of the Sabattus Police Department said that Hartford was traveling west on Sabattus Road toward Lewiston when he slowed down to turn right onto Main Street in Sabattus. He was hit from behind by a 2001 Dodge Durango driven by Crystal Hatch, 28, of Litchfield.

Prince said that Hatch was driving behind the 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle that Hartford was riding, but did not see that he was slowing down to make the right-hand turn until the last minute. Hatch swerved left to avoid hitting Hartford’s motorcycle, but still sideswiped the motorcycle, sending Hartford airborne off the bike.

Damage to Hartford’s motorcycle was estimated at $2,000; to Hatch’s SUV, $1,000. Prince said that Hartford was transported to the hospital with a shoulder injury.
