MEXICO — A special town meeting has been set for 6 p.m. Aug. 24 to vote on setting up a dangerous or dilapidated building account, and to use money from surplus to apply to the tax liability.
The meeting takes place in the town hall.
Town Manager John Madigan said funds for both articles will come from surplus.
He said he is requesting $125,000 be taken to go toward taxes, and $5,000 to set up the dangerous building fund.
Plans are to include an article in each future town meeting warrant requesting additional money for the dangerous building account.
He said the town has acquired a building on the floodplain near the post office that should be taken down. If residents approve the $5,000 at town meeting, it will be razed.
Eventually many other buildings at the same location will likely be razed, he said.
The board may set the tax rate for this year at the selectmen’s meeting that will follow, Madigan said.
The current year’s rate is $19.85 per $1,000 valuation. He said he expects the rate will increase $1.
In other matters, the board set a work session with the Recreation Committee prior to the Sept. 14 selectmen’s meeting. That joint session will be at 5:30 p.m., followed by the regular selectmen’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. Also, the due date for submissions for Citizen of the Year and part-time and full-time municipal employees of the year will be Sept. 14. The annual Night of Appreciation is set for Sept. 30.
