LEWISTON — Androscoggin Bank recently announced the recipients of its summer Bank on Community ABCommunity grants.

Every year, the bank supports hundreds of organizations, funding new initiatives, and responding to urgent needs in the community. This is the inaugural year of the Bank on Community ABCommunity grant program. The bank gave away a total of $29,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations that support community activities in the arts, education, environment, health, social services, animal welfare and community development. This summer’s grants represent the second and final installment this year.

The recipients located or operating in the central Maine area include:

Catholic Charities of Maine: has dedicated itself to creating, administering and advocating for programs and services that reach out and meet the critical human service needs of the state. Funds from the grant will go toward improving and maintaining the health and well-being of homebound seniors and those with disabilities in Androscoggin County, as well as updating and redesigning marketing materials, covering the increased costs of screening new volunteers and recruiting, training and matching volunteers with elderly clients.

Midcoast Symphony Orchestra: is an orchestra composed of 70 musicians, all volunteers living across Maine, who travel to Topsham once a week to practice. Every season, from October to May, the MSO performs four concerts at the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston, and will be using its ABCommunity grant to help defray the operating costs of the series.

Androscoggin Dance: was founded to enable qualified high school students in Lewiston-Auburn and surrounding communities to study and train at a pre-professional level — with the intention of preparing students to move on to nationally recognized schools and to dance professionally on the national stage. With its grant, Androscoggin Dance will be able to pay for instructors who will provide additional training for intensive-level students.

Junior Achievement of Maine: is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. Funds will be used to provide economic education programs for elementary schools in Lewiston-Auburn.
