DRESDEN — A 42-year-old Massachusetts man was critically injured Wednesday night when he drove off a private road on a 4-wheel ATV and struck a tree.

The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on Hunter Road, which is off Route 197, according to Maine Warden Service Sgt. Terry Hughes.

The man, who was not identified late Wednesday, was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

He was not wearing a helmet, according to Deborah Turcotte, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spokeswoman.

Game Warden Doug Kulis responded to the scene. Game Warden Josh Smith and Sgt. Hughes responded to the hospital.

The incident remains under investigation.
