AUBURN — The Auburn Police Department is inviting the public to participate in an ongoing accreditation assessment.

Assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. will arrive Saturday, Aug.  21, to examine all aspects of the department’s office policies and procedures, management, operations and support services.

Verification by CALEA is part of a voluntary process to gain law enforcement reaccreditation, the highest recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, according to a release issued by police Chief Phillip Crowell Jr.

As part of the assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, Aug. 23, at 6 p.m. The session will be conducted in the City Council Chambers at Auburn Hall, 60 Court St.

Those unable to attend but  wanting to speak with the assessment team may call the CALEA assessors directly by calling 333-6659 on Monday, Aug. 23, between 1 and 3 p.m.

Comments  by phone, as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to five to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards.

“The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar, but out-of-state law enforcement agencies,” according to the press release.  “During their visit, the assessors will review written materials, conduct interviews, and visit offices and other locations where compliance can be witnessed.”

The department must comply with 464 core accreditation standards to gain re-accreditation status.
