OQUOSSOC — “Mardi Gras in August” is the theme for the fifth annual Oquossoc Day celebration and dinner/dance on Saturday, Aug. 21.

Among the scheduled events are a dog show line-up at Oquossoc Grocery and dog show, a sailing race and boat parade, and a parade of airplanes, followed by a display of aerial bombardmanship involving dropping an object during a flyover in attempts to either hit or land nearest to a floating target in Rangeley Lake.

The day’s events start with Stony Batter Station’s Art and Antique Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot and continue to the new Rangeley Outdoor Sporting Heritage Museum, which is open with guided tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Oquossoc Log Church will also be open for viewing.

A Wooden Boat Show starts at 10 a.m. at Oquossoc Marina. That is followed by the dog show line-up at 11 a.m., and the dog show itself 30 minutes later.

Also at 11:30 a.m., registration begins for an Open Division Sailing Race, which starts at noon.

The judged Mardi-Graz-theme boat parade begins at 1 p.m. That is followed at 2:30 p.m. by the Parade of Airplanes and “Sink the Bismark.”

New this year are seaplane rides from Oquossoc Marina. Afternoon lake tours can be arranged on The Oquossoc Lady by calling 443-603-7929.

Local businesses will have a variety of specials.

The Oquossoc Marine Dance social hour is from 5 to 6 p.m. with a cash bar served by The Gingerbread House.

A potluck dinner will be held at Oquossoc Marine starting at 6 p.m.

The dance will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. with lively music provided by band Cahoots.

Dinner tickets are available on site, at the Gallery, and Oquossoc Marine for $15 per person, which includes dancing.
