PORTLAND (AP) — Portland police figures show a drop in crime and fighting in the city’s Old Port.
The Maine Sunday Telegram says beefed up police patrols have helped take a big bite out of the crime rate in the nightlife hotspot since last year.
Between May 23 and July 28 last year and the same period this year, the number of reported incidents dropped 27 percent, from 206 to 150.
Police Cmdr. Vern Malloch says officers are noticing smaller crowds and fewer problems overall in the Old Port.
