AUGUSTA – The Panther Track Club of Poland won its third consecutive Maine USA Track & Field Jr. Olympic State Championship title August 14 with a total of 458 team points.

Auburn Running Club placed second with a total team score of 255.

The Panthers are the largest youth track team in Maine with athletes from Poland, Raymond, New Gloucester, Minot, Mechanic Falls, Oxford, Gray, Hebron, Harrison, South Paris, Otisfield, Casco, Norway, Naples, Waterford and Bryant Pond.

At the meet the Panthers took home 16 gold medals, 16 silver, 18 bronze and 65 ribbons for fourth through sixth place.

Andrew Childs of Poland set a new state record at 5:09.57 in the boys’ 8-and-under racewalk. Will Shafer of New Gloucester, who has been with the Panthers since age 5 and is now completing his final year with the Panthers, broke three long distance state records: 800 meters (2:07.37); 1,500 meters (4:26.7) and 3,000 meters (9:38.35).
