100 years ago, 1910

Elie Laroche has the names of seven men who will enter the swimming contest Saturday afternoon, to be held in connection with the field day sports given by the Circle Canadian at Martin’s Point, Sabattus. Paul Bisson, the wrestler, is training hard for his bout with Johnny Dionne. The tug-of-war team of the club is willing to meet any five-man team of 800 pounds. The St. Louis Band will furnish the music. Elie Laroche has charge of the entries.

50 years ago, 1960

The Lewiston Board of Health and Welfare indicated last night that it will take steps to have unsanitary sewer conditions remedied in the Webster Street area if the sewer construction project doesn’t go through.

The matter was brought up by Bertrand Marquis, who said he visited the Pleasant, Webster and Shank street area recently. He said more homes are being built there, and he questioned why open sewers are allowed and what power the board has to get sewers built.

25 years ago 1985

A fact-finding panel will meet with Lewiston School Department and Lewiston Teachers’ Association negotiators Tuesday in hope of ironing out differences in an ongoing labor contract dispute.

School Superintendant Robert V. Connors said a three-person fact-finding board controlled by the Maine Labor Relations Board, composed of one neutral person and representatives of the School Department and LTA, will meet at the Dingley Building at 10 a.m. to review each side’s position.
