POLAND — Bruce M. Whittier Middle School staff will host an open house Thursday evening to welcome students, parents and others from Poland, Mechanic Falls and Minot. It begins at 6 p.m. at the school on Route 26.

The program will be patterned after the TV show “Extreme Makeover Home Edition,” Principal Ayesha Farag-Davis said. In that show, the cast builds a new home for a family in one week and positions a large bus to conceal it until the family steps out of their vehicle upon their return home.

At the school, staff will be assembled at the front of the building at 5:45 p.m. and shout “move that bus” at 6 p.m., giving everyone a view of the changes made to accommodate students from all three towns in RSU 16. Previously, only Poland students attended the school.

A decision to have middle school students from all three towns in one school was done this year to save more than $250,000, preserve programs, ensure greater equity for students, and offer more diverse opportunities.
