FRYEBURG -— The 1960s British Invasion hit-makers Chad Stuart & Jeremy Clyde, who brought us such classics as “A Summer Song,” “Yesterday’s Gone” and “Distant Shores,” will perform Saturday, Sept. 18, at Fryeburg Academy.

From 1964 to 1968, Chad & Jeremy had 11 U.S. hit singles and released seven classic albums. Since then, their music has been re-released on countless albums and CDs worldwide.

Chad & Jeremy reunited (for the second time) in 2003, and have been touring since.

Their current stage act is a two-man acoustic show mixing their hits, humor and storytelling with new original songs.

Of all the British Invasion acts of 1964, Chad & Jeremy were unique in that not only were they long-haired purveyors of English-accented pop hits, but they were clever songwriters who had a softer side and a sensibility closer to many of their U.S. folk-pop contemporaries.

They also had a quick wit they used to great effect not only on records but on stage as well as on television shows, including “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “The Patty Duke Show,” “Batman” and “Laredo.”

Stuart and Clyde met at drama school in 1960, and were playing a small folk club in London when they were discovered by famed film composer John Barry.

Some of their most critically acclaimed work was initially some of their least known — later garnering them cult status. The progressive 1967 release “Of Cabbages and Kings” was followed a year later by “The Ark,” their last album of the 1960s, with Jeremy returning to acting and the duo disbanding. In the 1980s, they reunited to release an album, star in a London West End musical and tour the United States.

The most recent phase in their career began in 2003, when they reunited for a PBS TV music special. Since then, they have performed their two-man show all over the United States, Canada, Hawaii and the Philippines.

In 2008, they released “ARK-eology,” a newly recorded tribute to their legendary classic albums, featuring re-recordings of their favorite songs from their classic catalog. They are currently working on an album of original music.

Chad & Jeremy will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center on the Fryeburg Academy campus. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors (65+) and $15 for students. For tickets or more information, call 935-9232 or visit fryeburgacademy.org.
