AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The defense for a Maine man accused of killing his 80-year-old mother contends he was driven by a lifetime of abuse from her and he should be convicted of manslaughter, not murder.

Defense lawyer James Billings says 44-year-old Kenneth McDonald killed his mother as she lay in her bed “out of extreme fear or extreme anger because he was provoked.”

Assistant Attorney General Leane Zainea said Janice McDonald’s jugular vein and her carotid artery were severed on Aug. 24, 2009, in the Monmouth home they shared.

She said Kenneth McDonald repeatedly beat and stabbed his mother and left a bloodied handprint on her wall as he left. The Kennebec Journal says the trial, which began Monday, is expected to continue through the week.
