BALDWIN — A teenager was injured Saturday after a small-scale train car derailed during a club outing that started in Fryeburg.

Lt. Walter Grzyb of the Maine State Police said 16-year-old Zachary Perrin was injured in the incident, which was reported at 11:30 a.m. Perrin was taken by Sacopee Valley Rescue to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was discharged the same day.

“The tracks are discontinued, generally speaking,” Grzyb said. “No trains really run on it.”

Grzyb said a club which operates small-scale, individual railroad cars was running seven or eight of the cars, with permission, between Fryeburg and Windham. The lead car dislodged a track, causing the car behind it to derail.

The incident was initially reported to be in Hiram, but later found to be in Baldwin, which is in York County.  Sgt. Donald Shead and Troopers Adam Fillebrown and Jason Wing responded to the scene.

Grzyb said he did not know the name of the club or whether anyone else was riding in Perrin’s car.

The rail line is part of the Portland and Ogdensburg Railway, which was abandoned in 1994. The Mountain Division Alliance was formed in the same year and is currently working to establish a recreational trail along the 52-mile spur between Fryeburg and Portland, with the railroad tracks themselves remaining in place for possible future use.
