MEXICO — More than 100 sixth graders gathered in the lobby of Mountain Valley Middle School on Aug. 26 for the first day of school, checking out the homeroom lists and finding out who was in their classroom.

After morning announcements the students were called to the lecture hall for the first assembly of their middle school career. The lobby was lined with staff members, clapping to music cheering them on. All staff members were introduced during the assembly, and each had a few words of support and wisdom to share with the students.

The afternoon included seventh- and eighth-grade teachers doing activities with the students such as working out in the weight room, art projects, working in the garden, board games, walks and hikes.

The seventh and eighth graders returned to school on Aug. 27. There are approximately 300 students in the middle school for the 2010-2011 school year.
