DEAR SUN SPOTS: Attention all knitters, crocheters and crafters, Operation Gratitude has set a goal of 60,000 care packages for our troops. There are many projects to get involved in, such as the Scarves for Troops and Craft for a Cause 2010 Contest teamed up with Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. Donations are needed for postage.

Every care package costs $15 to assemble and ship (all items are donated and valued at $100 or more). You can go to www.opgratitude.com to view this worthy cause. For more information or if you would like to get involved, you can call me at 364-7018 or e-mail me at maryj04276@yahoo.com. — Mary, Rumford

Hospice volunteers help support terminally ill patients and their families at home, in long-term care facilities and at the AHCH Hospice House in Auburn. A 27-hour hospice course will be held in Lewiston beginning Sept. 28.

Bereavement volunteers offer companionship to someone who is grieving the loss of a loved one. A 15-hour bereavement course will be held Tuesday and Thursday afternoons beginning Oct. 28.

Volunteers are valued members of the hospice and bereavement teams and are matched with patients or clients in or near their communities. We ask for a time commitment of two to four hours each week. Classes will be held in Lewiston at our Strawberry Avenue location.

For more information, please contact volunteer services at 777-7740 or 1-800-482-7412. — Polly Robinson, polly.robinson@ahch.org

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I was wondering if anyone has any paperback western books they would like to give away. When I’m done reading them, I pass them along to others. You used to be able to get them at yard sales. All summer I have checked, and no one has any. Don’t people read these anymore? I don’t have a computer, and I don’t drive in the city. I will gladly pay postage. Thank you. — Judy LeBroke, 15 Main St. Apt. 1, Norway, ME 04268, 743-2768

ANSWER: Sun Spots suspects that westerns are not as popular as they  once were, say during the heyday of “Bonanza” and “Gunsmoke.” However, you do have an option. The Norway library is part of a statewide system called Minerva that allows patrons to borrow books from dozens of libraries. Visit your librarian and have her show you how to log on to the system. Select the subject “western stories.” Sun Spots did and came up with 4,993 books you can request. You can also search for your favorite authors. Happy reading!
