PORTLAND — Comedienne, actress, playwright and “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Margaret Cho will bring her new national stand-up tour, “Cho Dependent,” to the State Theatre on Oct. 25.

While in her early twenties, Cho hit the college circuit, where she garnered a nomination for Campus Comedian of The Year. Arsenio Hall introduced her to late-night audiences; Bob Hope put her on a prime time special; and, seemingly overnight, Cho became a national celebrity.

In 1999, she chronicled her experience on the sitcom in an off-Broadway, one-woman show called “I’m The One That I Want.” After the success of her first show, she launched “Notorious C.H.O.” in 2001, a smash-hit 37-city national tour that culminated in a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall. “Notorious C.H.O.” was also recorded and released as a feature film.

“Cho Dependent” features new stand-up and a few live performances of songs on her forthcoming comedy music album of the same name.

Throughout her career, Cho, who in her stand-up routines critiques social and political problems, especially issues pertaining to race and sexuality, has been honored by GLAAD, American Women in Radio and Television, the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund.

She will compete on “Dancing with the Stars” beginning on Monday, Sept. 20; the show airs at 8 p.m. on ABC.
