100 years ago, 1910

Superintendent Cyril Lablanche of the Lewiston City Farm is one of the many who believe that potatoes, and good potatoes too, can be raised as well in this county as in Aroostook. And to demonstrate that he practices what he preaches, he has at the farm five acres of as fine potatoes as can be seen in the state. Every year enough vegetables are raised to support the inmates and a considerable amount is also sold.

50 years ago, 1960

The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA will start its series of weekly hops for teenagers this Saturday night, with the series to continue to Memorial Day.

The dances will last from 8 to 11 p.m. and are open to boys and girls from both cities who are students in the ninth through twelfth grades.

25 years ago 1985

They waited animatedly in line, chatting and foot-tapping to the music of Bruce Springsteen, as persistent drizzle and the smells of more than 1,000 pounds of barbecuing chicken filled the air.

And packed underneath a big green-and-white striped marquee, more than 300 freshmen from three area colleges mingled as they received the annual official welcome from Lewiston-Auburn businesses and city leaders.

The rain Friday afternoon may have reduced the numbers, sponsors said, but the several hundred freshmen who did turn out for the 32nd annual Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce chicken barbecue seemed to enjoy themselves nonetheless.
