MECHANIC FALLS — Hillary Groves and Kelley Handy will bring the “Out of the Darkness” community walk to Mechanic Falls at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Elm Street Elementary School, in hopes to educate the community and help prevent suicide.
The two teens have been victims of suicide and depression and are taking negative past experiences and twisting them into something positive. Groves, now 18, was 14 at the time when she lost her best friend to suicide. After her friend’s death, she herself was at risk for committing suicide. She then turned to cocaine for comfort and a year later she was detained at Long Creek Correctional facility after trying to get off drugs with out any help and support.
After she got out, she found the resources and help she needed and started doing volunteer work. She now travels through out the U.S. and presents her story.
