JAY — Police are investigating a break-in at Otis Ventures LLC, the former Wausau Paper mill, that was reported late Sunday.

Entry was forced, police Chief Larry White Sr. said Monday. “We believe there is more than one person involved.”

Owners Mary Howes and her husband, Tim DeMillo, were still doing an inventory on Monday of what was missing.

White said once the individuals got in they drove motorized carts around and two of them were damaged, he said. The carts, similar to golf carts, are used to drive around inside the extensive complex.

A couple of windows were broken and some doors were kicked in, White said.

The VCR for the security camera was also pulled from its casing and stolen, he said.

Detective Richard Caton IV and officer Russell Adams were at the mill Monday gathering evidence.

“We do have some strong leads,” White said. “We have discovered how they entered the building but due to the ongoing investigation we do not want to comment on it.”

Police hope to retrieve the VCR and do have some leads on where that may be, White said.

A Maine State Police dive team was expected to search the Androscoggin River on Monday afternoon to retrieve other evidence.

One portable radio that was taken off one of the carts was found outside the mill, White said.

Security at the mill is going to be beefed up not only by Otis Ventures but also by Jay Police Department, White said.
