PORTLAND — Two of Portland’s most popular rock bands, Rustic Overtones and Gypsy Tailwind, will come together for a New Year’s Eve party at Port City Music Hall.
Members of Rustic Overtones and Gypsy Tailwind have collaborated recently. Rustic’s Jon Roods appears on Gypsy’s frontman Dan Connor’s debut solo EP “Deep Water.” And word has it, Gypsy vocalist Anna Lombard McGeachey will sit in with Rustic during part of its New Year’s Eve set.
Rustic Overtones sold out Port City’s first New Year’s Eve celebration last year. The band’s appearance followed the release of its fifth full-length LP “The New Way Out” to popular acclaim.
Originally formed in Portland in 1995, Rustic Overtones split in 2002. The band kicked off its official reunion in July 2007, with a free outdoor performance for 6,000 fans and a new album, “Light at the End.”
Band mates describe their sound as a rock/soul/funk mix of “fiery rhythm section,” “blazing horn riffs” and “soulful vocals.”
Following the release of “The Halo Sessions,” Gypsy Tailwind’s appearance at the Baystock Music Festival opening for rock legend John Fogerty cemented its reputation as a live band. The band’s first appearance at Port City Music Hall was a sellout, with the 2009 CD release party for “Decades and Days.”
Gypsy’s style remains rooted firmly within Americana and roots traditions, flickering between folk, rock and alt-country.
The 21-plus concert will run from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the music hall at 504 Congress St. Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 at the door. For tickets, visit www.portcitymusichall.com or any Bull Moose music store location.
