GRAY —It has taken some time, but Gray-New Gloucester is starting to find its pace under new coach Tony DiBiase.

On Tuesday night, the Patriots put Lake Region through its paces, and the Lakers couldn’t keep up.

Adam Jensen scored a season-high 35 points and swiped six steals to lead the Patriots to their fourth consecutive victory, a 71-50 rout of Lake Region.

Gray-New Gloucester (4-2) is averaging 69 points per game during the winning streak, a sign that the Patriots are finally getting a full grasp of the up-tempo, pressure style that DiBiase won state titles with at Gorham, Portland and South Portland.

Tuesday night, the Patriots forced 28 turnovers with their trapping half-court zone, got out in transition and got the ball into the hands of their top scorers, Jensen and Josh Farynaz (21 points, eight rebounds).

“We practice a lot on pressure,” DiBiase said. “That’s been a big change, I think, for the kids, to learn about the up-tempo style that we’re playing.”

“Everything’s just way more intense, way more up-paced (this year),” Jensen said. “You’ve just got to be better.”

The Patriots were much better in the second and third quarters, exploding from a one-point lead after one. After Kevin Gilbson’s 3-pointer pulled the Lakers within four early in the second, Gray-New Gloucester went on an 8-0 run, sparked by a nice give-and-go from Heath Martell to Ryan Cavallaro (six points, nine rebounds, five steals), and back-to-back fast break layups by Cavallro and Jensen to take a 25-13 lead midway through the second period.

The Lakers (1-5) got the deficit back down to single digits a couple of times, but 20 first-half turnovers and a penchant for sending Farynaz and Jensen to the line helped the Patriots take a 35-22 lead into halftime.

“I think we’ve got a great pressure defense,” Farynaz said. “We look to trap on the wings, get quick traps, get the ball moving around and get some steals.”

“I think Lake Region hung in there in the first half. In the second half, it kind of got to them after awhile and we started getting easy baskets,” DiBiase said.

The turnovers continued on Lake Region’s first two possessions of the second half, which allowed Gray-New Gloucester to open an 18-point lead on a Aaron Boulos 3-pointer and Farynaz hoop.

“We were just breaking down their defense. Every time we drove the lane, passes opened up and layups all day,”Jensen said.

The Lakers pulled to within 13 again on a couple of occasions, but the Patriots built the bulge up to 20 on a Heath Martell putback to end the quarter, then inflated the margin into the high 20s early in the fourth.

Alex Hartford led Lake Region with 19 points, 11 rebounds and four steals, while Danny Place added 14 and Gilson 11.

The Patriots have the most difficult segment of their schedule coming up in the next 10 days, with road games against Cape Elizabeth, Yarmouth and North Yarmouth Academy followed by a home tilt with unbeaten Greely.

“It’s going to be a tough stretch, but just go out and play,” DiBiase said. “We’ve got enough athletic ability to hang in there. If we get that one good night, I think we could play with them. But, who knows?”
