JAY — Two local drivers were injured Thursday afternoon in an accident on Route 4, police said.
Nancy Lindgren, 78, who was driving a 2004 Volkswagen, complained of pain and was taken by NorthStar Ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, Jay police Cpl. Jeff Fournier said.
Lindsay Couture, 18, who was driving a 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup truck, complained of pain from the seat belt, but declined to be taken to the hospital, he said.
Fournier said the accident happened shortly before 2:13 p.m. near the police station when Lindgren was attempting to turn left onto the four-lane highway from the Hannaford end of Jay Plaza.
He said Couture, who was driving north in the right lane, saw Lindgren’s blue Volkswagen pull out in front of her truck and tried to swerve to avoid a head-on collision.
The impact crushed the front of the Volkswagen and spun it 180 degrees across the highway where it came to rest in the farthest southbound lane facing south.
Fournier said the pickup continued across both southbound lanes and traveled through snow down an embankment.
He said Lindgren told him she “was pulling out and didn’t notice oncoming traffic.”
Fournier estimated damage to the Volkswagen at $9,500 and $2,500 to the pickup.
Jay firefighters assisted with debris and fluids cleanup and traffic control, which was limited to the two northbound lanes for 45 minutes before two Hilltop tow trucks removed the vehicles.
Jay police Chief Larry White also assisted.
