SOUTH PARIS — Gordon E. Smith, 83, of Norway, passed away on Friday, Jan. 14, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.
He was born in Oxford Oct. 18, 1927, the son of Egbert and Delia Green Smith. He graduated from Oxford High School, where he was a pitcher for the baseball team. He also played minor league ball. He entered the U. S. Air Force during World War II. He attended East Coast Aero Tech before being called back into active duty during the Korean War. He married Betty Benedetto on Sept. 24, 1951. In 1958, he took over management of the Red/White store. In 1961 he opened Smith’s Shop ‘n Save. He served as president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Oxford Hills Boosters Club, and Norway Country Club. He was a member of the Norway/Paris Kiwanis Club, the Norway/Paris Fish and Game, and served on the building committee at St. Catherine of Sienna Church. He was a director at Norway National Bank and Oxford Bank. He also served as trustee of Stephen’s Memorial Hospital. He enjoyed fishing, skiing, hunting, golf and travel. He was a member of the Cinnamon Camp Club and the Kennebago Lake Camp Owners Association.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Norway; a son, Michael and his wife, Beth, of Bethlehem, Pa.; and three grandsons, Benjamin, Matthew and William.
He was predeceased by a brother, Norman; and a sister, Gloria.
