NORWAY — A $500 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who stole three flags from a memorial park in December.

The American, prisoner of war and state of Maine flags that hung over Veterans Memorial Park at Paris and Main streets were taken sometime during the night after Pearl Harbor Day services. The park is in front of the Rowe Elementary School and across Main Street from the Stone-Smart American Legion Post.

“On Dec. 7 we lowered the flags to half staff. The next morning they were missing,” Legion Commander Ron Snow said.

The American flag has since been replaced through a donation from Sen. Susan Collins’ office, he said.

Although the police were informed and a $500 reward offered, there have been no leads, Snow said.

“We didn’t expect anything to come out of it,” Snow said of attempts to retrieve the flags through a reward. “They took them on a sacred day.”

The flags, which cost about $50 each, will be replaced as soon as the Legion members meet again, he said.

“We’re a small post. We’re trying hard to do what we can in the community,” he said. “We’ll have new flags flying in the next few weeks.”

Anyone with information may call the Norway police at 743-5303 or the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department at 743-9554.
