RUMFORD — John M. Johnston Jr., 72, died at his residence on High Street on Sunday, Jan. 16.
He was born in Rumford, Sept. 4, 1938, the son of John and Irene (Storer) Johnston Sr. He graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford, Class of 1957 and from Emerson College in Boston with his degree in broadcasting.
John worked as a radio disc jockey in Portland and Rumford for many years and also worked on the paper machines at Boise Cascade and Mead Paper companies for several years, until retirement.
He was a member of Blazing Star Lodge 30, AM & AM, Kora Temple Shrine and Rumford Maine Lodge 862, B.P.O.E. and had been active with his high school class reunion committee.
Survivors include his daughters, Judith Richardson and husband, Wayne, of South Portland and Jolene Troiano and husband, Pasquale, of Scarborough; a son, Jay Johnston and wife, Brianne, of Scarborough; and grandchildren, Layne and John Johnston IV, Sarena Richardson, Christina Troiano and Sarah and Vanessa Johnston.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Sonja; a son, John Johnston III; and a granddaughter, Darien Richardson.
