DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have an answer for the old-fashioned sleigh ride inquiry on Jan. 14. My husband and I have Belgian draft horses and offer sleigh rides at our farm, which has been in Bill’s family since 1810. We have a small sleigh that can take up to six people and the larger sleigh can take up to 12 people.

The ride starts at our barn full of farm animals (Guernsey dairy cows, pigs, chickens, a bunny, dogs and horses, of course). It continues through fields and pastures and down into the woods. The ride lasts about 45 minutes and then ends back at the barn.

There is a spot in the woods where we stop for a bonfire package if the group chooses where we build a fire and have hot cocoa and roast marshmallows for an additional cost.

The price is $70 for up to four people and then $5 per person, children 3 and under are free. The bonfire package is $35. See our website at www.high-view-farm.com. — Darcy Winslow, belgian1@myfairpoint.net, 595-1601

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In regard to a sleigh ride inquiry recently, the World’s Greatest Sleigh Rides will be held on Feb. 20 in Lisbon Falls. Last year, 16 teams with sleighs of all descriptions, hauling from two to 16 people, gave many, many rides. From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. great horses will take you through fields and woods. All proceeds go to the Pine Tree Society. — gordonc36@aol.com

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Some guests who have been to our farm read the Jan. 14 inquiry about the old-fashioned sleigh rides and told us we should write in.

My husband and I have a farm in Waterford where we provide sleigh rides with our Belgian draft horse mares. All rides are private and by appointment. Our team pulls you across our field, over the river and through the woods for a 40-minute old-fashioned horse-drawn sleigh ride.

Our website is www.northernheightsfarm.com. We also have a Facebook page, where you can follow our farm: Sleigh Rides in Maine @ Northern Heights Farm.

Thank you. I hope this is a help to you. — Colleen and Jeffrey Winslow, northernheightsfarm@yahoo.com

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Deepwood Farm near Bethel has old-fashioned sleigh rides. We have a newly redone sleigh that dates back to the 1800s. It is a two-seater, and we can take four or five people on a ride. The ride lasts about half an hour as we travel through wooded areas and fields on groomed trails. Quite lovely.

The cost is $50 for two persons or $75 for four or five people. Call 824-2595 for reservations.

Deepwood Farm also does the sleigh rides at the Bethel Inn on Saturday nights, 824-2175, ext. 0. That sleigh holds eight people, and the cost is $15 for adults, $12 for 10 and under, and 2 and under are free.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Once again, area residents, businesses and churches generously donated their time and resources to help the children and elderly members of our community through the Rural Community Action Ministry, a social service agency serving 13 area towns. Fourteen area families received Thanksgiving or Christmas meals. Toys, clothing, wrapping paper, ribbon, mittens and hand-knit pet blankets decked the halls of RCAM for the annual Christmas gift program, and donors provided gifts for more than 50 seniors and children.

This has been a particularly difficult year for many, including our donors, and RCAM would like to thank all those who helped make the past months’ programs so successful. These projects wouldn’t be possible without the support of the many area businesses, schools, churches, civic groups, families and individuals who annually donate the items distributed to some of our most vulnerable neighbors. — Pam Bell, RCAM volunteer, pwbell@fairpoint.net
