FARMINGTON — Sam Sytsma and Melsen Carlsen, childhood friends from Farmington, will present a concert of art songs and piano solos on Saturday, Feb. 12, at Nordica Auditorium.

The first half of the concert will feature lyrical and romantic songs by French composer Gabriel Faure, including “Apres un reve” and “Clair de lune,” as well as “Nocturne For The Left Hand,” a piano piece by Russian composer Alexander Scriabin.

In contrast, the second half will feature music by contemporary composers.

Melsen will play piano solos written by his father, Philip Carlsen, including “October” and “Polka Folks.”

Together, Melsen and Sytsma will perform a new work written for them by Mary E. Larew, a friend they met while studying at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. The duo also plans to make music in an improvisation which may include accordion and audience participation as well as the piano and singing.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation at the door.
