Swift saw biathletes compete during the 2010 winter Olympics and said “that’s what I want to do,” her father Randy said. Sunday was Swift’s first time shooting any type of gun. Athletes from around the world will converge in Presque Isle for the Biathlon World Cup on Feb. 4-6 and then again in Fort Kent for another World Cup race Feb. 10-13. Clips for the air rifles hold five pellets. Adult competitors will shoot a .22-caliber rifle during competitions. “The procedure is so much more precise,” Joel Hinshaw said about competitions involving .22’s. He explained that entering and exiting the shooting area is very safety driven when real guns are used.

McEvoy, a seventh-grader at Gray-New Gloucester Middle School, shot two perfect rounds of five targets each with an air rifle. Hinshaw is a member of the Southern Maine Biathlon Club, the organization that sponsored the event.
