Breastfeeding support

AUBURN — Expectant women and breastfeeding mothers are invited to the La Leche League meeting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 102 Bennett Ave. Babies are always welcome.

Discussion, “Great Beginnings: Establishing and Maintaining Breastfeeding,” will focus on preparing to nurse baby at birth and adjusting to babies’ changing needs as a family. All concerns about breastfeeding are welcome for discussion.

Book sale

WAYNE — A book sale will be held from Feb. 12 to 19 at Carey Memorial Library, Old Winthrop Road. Hours Saturdays, Feb. 12 and 19, will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Through the week, the sale will be held during regular library hours. Books will be $1 a bag on Feb. 19.

Police academy

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Police Dept. is hosting its first 2011 citizen police academy starting Thursday, March 10. The times are from 6 to 8:15 p.m. for 10 weeks.

The CPA gives an inside look at police work and the Lewiston Police Dept. Those interested need not be a resident of Lewiston to attend.

A background check is required, and applications need to be in by Friday, March 4. Class size is limited. Application are available at the Lewiston PD Web site. The CRO Office at 292 Bates St and at the police station. Contact Officer Tom Murphy at 786-2405 with questions.

Snowmobile safety

MONMOUTH — The Cochnewagan Trailblazers Snowmobile Club will sponsor an ATV-snowmobile safety education course from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at Monmouth Academy.

Passage of a final exam is required, and participants must attend both classes in order to receive a certificate. Mike Feeney will be the instructor.

A $10 fee assists in defraying the costs of materials, advertising and lunch on Saturday. Call Monmouth-Winthrop Adult Education at 377-2265 to register for the course, promoted by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Person to Person

POLAND — “Understanding the Breath: A Yoga Approach” will be the topic of Terri Young’s presentation to the monthly Person to Person gathering from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13.

Young, a certified kripalu yoga instructor, has been practicing yoga since 1986 and has been teaching yoga classes in Poland for more than 10 years. She will explore the relationship of the breath and the nervous system, as well as teach several breathing techniques for at-home practice.

The program will he held in the Community Room of Ricker Memorial Library. A potluck supper will precede the program. Everyone is welcome. Guests are asked to bring a casserole, salad or dessert to share.

Market raffle

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Winter Farmers’ Market will raffle a Valentine’s Day basket filled with sweet treats, handcrafted goods and artwork from a variety of vendors.

The market will be open from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at St. Mary’s Nutrition Center, 208 Bates St., and one visitor will leave with the basket, valued at more than $75. More then 20 vendors will offer an array of products.

The market will offer hot food through the Winter Market Café and, this month, live jazz with members of Three Point Trio.
