ROXBURY — A $2,000 grand prize awaits anyone catching the 2-pound tagged brook trout in next weekend’s 32nd annual Larry Mercier Memorial Ice Fishing Derby on Roxbury Pond.

Sponsored by the Mexico Lions Club, the event will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12. The rain date is Sunday, Feb. 13.

Anglers from across the state and New England usually participate in the fun, especially children.

The entry fee is $10, with payouts of $200, $150 and $100 for the top three catches of pickerel and bass. The largest trout nets $150 and the largest perch fetches $100.

All prizes are awarded shortly after 3 p.m. the day of the derby.

The event is the club’s major fundraiser to provide eyeglasses for local people in need who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford proper eye care, something it has done for more than 30 years. All proceeds are distributed to Mexico, Roxbury and Rumford residents.
