JAY — The town office is accepting donations for three families who lost their belongings in an apartment building fire at 24 Jewell St. on Thursday.

Anyone wishing to donate may write a check to the Town of Jay, Town Clerk Ronda Palmer said.

Six adults and six children were left homeless after the fire.

It was started by a 2-year-old playing with a lighter in a bedroom on the second floor, fire officials said.

The families stayed with relatives Thursday night. People are looking to find them housing, Jay police Detective Richard Caton IV said.

The children who lost their belongings are a girl, 4, and five boys, ages 2, 6, 8, 9 and 15, Caton said.

The town office will be closed Monday for Presidents Day but will reopen Tuesday if anyone wants to drop anything off. The address is 340 Main St., Jay, ME 04239
