The Twin Cities are well-represented among the eight semifinalists for the Travis Roy Award, which were announced Friday.
The annual award, named after former North Yarmouth Academy standout and Boston University skater Travis Roy, is bestowed upon the top senior high school hockey player in Class A, and takes into account athletic performance, academics and community service.
Roy was paralyzed 11 seconds into his first shift for BU as a first-year player in 1995, and the Class A coaches’ association first handed out the award in 1996 — to St. Dom’s skater Brian Toussaint.
The Saints have another player in the mix this year, too, as two-year captain Alex Parker is among the four finalists from Eastern Class A. The other three? All from Lewiston High School.
Colt Steele and Sam Cloutier, both forwards, and goaltender Cam Poussard are also among the eight semifinalists.
Thornton’s Sam Canales and Jon Pate, along with Biddeford’s Nick Gagne and South Portland’s Tommy Ellis are the representatives from Western Class A.
The area’s four semifinalists all have sparkling resumes.
For the past two hockey seasons, the Saints’ Parker has been a first team All-State selection. In 2009-10, he was the team MVP and recipient of the team award for having the best plus/minus ratio. This past regular season, he had 36 points (18 goals, 18 assists). He has registered more than 100 career points in his career. Academically, Parker is in the top-10 of his class and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Poussard has been a four-year starter for the Blue Devils. Cam leads all goaltenders in Class A hockey with a 0.73 GAA and a .960 save percentage. Through the end of the regular season, he has recorded 53 wins, 15 losses and 5 ties, with 27 career shutouts. Poussard was elected to the All-East second team his freshmen and sophomore years, and to the All-East first team his junior year. He is an honor roll student and second overall in his senior class.
Cloutier is another four-year varsity player for the Blue Devils. He is the team’s captain and third leading scorer in the state with 47 points, a standout two-way center and honor roll student. He also volunteers for the Lewiston Area Youth Hockey League.
Steele is in his first year with the Blue Devils. He is the team’s leading scorer and second leading scorer in the state with 47 points. Before joining the Blue Devils, Steele played in the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs and with Team Northern New England and Team New England. Steele is an honor roll student at Lewiston and a volunteer with several learn to skate programs.
The Class A coaches will announce four finalists — two from each conference — and will present the award at the organization’s year-end banquet following the completion of this year’s playoffs.
