LEWISTON — A Sabattus man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend and her attempted rescuer before barricading himself in his parents home appeared in 8th District Court on Monday in handcuffs, his face swollen and bruised.

Leein Hinkley, 30, was charged with attempted murder, punishable by up to 30 years in prison and aggravated assault, which carries a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Judge Paul Cote Jr. set Hinkley’s bail at $100,000 cash. He is seeking a court-appointed attorney.

Prosecutors asked for high bail given Hinkley’s extensive criminal history, including several convictions for assault.

Cote added conditions to Hinkley’s bail, including no use or possession of illegal drugs or alcohol, no possession of dangerous weapons and no contact with his two victims, including his girlfriend, Jennifer Alexander.

James Howaniec, who represented Hinkley on Monday, said he has “significant state of mind issues,” as well as a medical history of epilepsy.

During a courthouse meeting before his hearing, Hinkley had trouble remembering names of family members and whether he had graduated from high school, Howaniec said. A mental examination would be expected Howaniec said, but urged the judge to leave that determination to Hinkley’s appointed attorney.

Howaniec didn’t argue for lower bail, reasoning Hinkley would not be able to afford even a small amount because he has no assets.

Lisbon police said they got a call Sunday shortly before 5 p.m. from a resident on King Road who said there had been a stabbing and the assailant had fled.

The two victims were taken to hospitals.

Alexander had been driving a vehicle with Hinkley as passenger. They argued and she pulled into a driveway on King Road, police said. He began to stab her when a man at that home saw it and ran to the vehicle to try to get Alexander out.

The man was stabbed during his efforts. Alexander was pulled from the vehicle and another good Samaritan arrived to help, police said.

Hinkley drove away in the vehicle — there was a 13-month-old in the backseat — to his parents’ home at 202 Williams Road in Sabattus.

Area law enforement agencies met at the Settlement Store on Route 9 with Lisbon police Sgt. Harry Moore to coordinate efforts.

Moore reached a family member of Hinkley by phone at the family home. He was told Hinkley had been there, but left, taking a shotgun and ammunition and fleeing into the woods, police said.

He apparently had left the baby in the house.

A Maine State Police tactical unit arrived. At about 6:30 p.m., family members were able to subdue Hinkley and turn him over to police at their home, police said.

“The action, without question, alleviated the situation from potentially becoming more dangerous,” Lisbon police Chief David Brooks said.

Alexander suffered five wounds and was expected to remain in the hospital for days, police said.

The male victim suffered one stab wound and was treated and released from a hospital.

Hinkley is a convicted felon with an extensive criminal history dating back to 2001.

In 2003 and 2008 he was convicted of assault, and in 2004 he was convicted of violating a protection order and burglary, and was sentenced to two years in prison.
