Locals lead Jr. Pirates

SACO — Buoyed by the performance of four local hockey players, the Portland Junior Pirates captured the overall championship in this year’s Portland Junior Pirates President’s Day Tournament at the Maine Hockey Group Ice Centre.

Facing the challenge from seven Massachusetts teams and one from New Hampshire, the Maine team was undefeated in five games.

Leading the local players was Caleb Labrie, who collected eight goals and three assists and was presented both with a Player of the Game medal and the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament trophy.

Jarod Lavallee contributed two assists. Kyle Ullrich logged two goals, one a game-winner, and an assist. Jamie Zanca picked up a goal and three assists.

Renegades salvage split

The Maine Renegades squirt travel hockey team split its two games this past weekend in Valley League hockey action.

Maine started out with a 2-1 win over Waltham. The Rens outshot their opponent 21-7. Casey Cloutier and Cam Niven provided a two-goal lead, with assists going to Ryan Blouin and Evan Cox. Cloutier was named the Hard Hat Player of the Game.

In game two of the day, the Renegades found themselves in a 3-0 hole to Newburyport before they got things going. Reed Hopkins scored two quick goals to make it close in the second period, but Newburyport kept the Renegades off the scoreboard the rest of the game. Assisting on Hopkins’ goals were Cox and Blouin.

Maranacook wins pair

Maranacook Peewee Hockey picked up two convincing wins over the weekend.

Brandon Coulombe and Zack Godbout each scored two goals in a 6-3 victory over Auburn at Kents Hill. Matt Welch and Zach Davidson both added one goal. Bailey Stockford picked up an assist. Evan Emerson tallied twice to lead Auburn. Jacob Lawrence logged an assist. Jason St. Pierre was the winning goaltender, opposed by Reece Rodrigue.

The second half of the home-and-home series was played in Auburn, with the Black Bears scoring an impressive 7-0 triumph. Nick Cerullo, Joey Baumann and Godbout each scored twice, with Nick Bowie adding a goal. Coulombe collected two assists, with one each by Baumann and Hunter Tims. Jack Vickerson registered the shutout in goal.
