FALMOUTH — Freda Geneva Davis Phinney, 89, a longtime resident of Gorham, passed away peacefully on March 1, at Sedgewood Commons.
She was born in Lewiston, July 28, 1921, to Francis G. Davis Sr. and Linna E. Richmond. Freda grew up in Turner on a dairy farm with her eight siblings and graduated from Leavitt Institute. She married Edwin M. Phinney in 1951; they were together until his death in 2008.
While raising her two daughters, Freda began her own business, Freda’s Ceramics. She poured and fired ceramics from her own molds and taught painting techniques for more than 30 years. Her creativity did not stop when she retired. She took classes in oil painting and created many beautiful florals and landscapes.
She sewed decorative bags by the hundreds and gave them away to family and friends. She knitted endless pairs of mittens for the Mitten Tree at South Gorham Baptist Church, of which she was an active member.
Freda was also an avid gardener, and in the warm months could be found outside digging in the dirt — but not without earrings, lipstick and hairdo. She enjoyed her summer vacations and rented camps at Bear Pond in Turner with her family and later at Bailey’s Island with her sisters. Freda was energetic and liked to “gallivant” as her husband called it. He would pull the car up to the door for her and out she would come, dressed to the nines, ready for her next adventure.
She is survived by daughters, Brenda Pelletier of Gorham and Kristine Leadbetter of Washington; grandchildren, Angela Pelletier of Portland, Nick Pelletier of Gorham, Tricia Goodine of Scarborough, Nathan Leadbetter of Colorado, and Linna Eddy of Washington; one brother, Blaine Davis of Lisbon Falls; and several nieces and nephews; lastly, Freda leaves her devoted and loving friends, Jo and George Grovo, who provided comfort and companionship for the last several years of her life.
