FARMINGTON — Eight fire departments tackled a blaze in a two-story home at 391 Owen Mann Road on Saturday.

The house was still standing, but the inside was heavily damaged, Deputy Chief Clyde Ross of Farmington Fire and Rescue said.

By late afternoon, a State Fire Marshal’s Office investigator was still trying to locate the homeowner, Elizabeth Theriault. No one was home at the time of the 11:40 a.m. fire, he said. The fire is under investigation. No animals were found and Ross did not know whether Theriault lived alone.

A neighbor noticed smoke coming from the eaves and windows of the house located about 2 miles up the road, which is off Porter Hill Road, and called.

There was no driveway, only a 150- to 200-foot path from the road to the house near the woods. Firefighters set up a shuttle of water and equipment because they had to keep the trucks on the road. There was plenty of water, but it had to be shuttled from a hydrant near the laundromat on Town Farm Road, he said.

The house had a generator and solar panels but no regular electricity. With the equipment and contents of the house, Ross estimated at least a $75,000 loss.

Members of the department were returning from a hazardous-material training session held from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Otis Mill in Jay when they received the call. Several  departments who provided mutual aid for the fire also participated in the training.

Crews from Wilton, Jay, Chesterville, New Sharon, Industry, Temple and Strong were called to help Farmington with the fire.
