NEW VINEYARD — Fire heavily damaged an old farmhouse on Anson Valley Road late Thursday afternoon, fire Chief Doug Churchill said Friday. There were no injuries.

“It was likely caused by a wood stove, chimney fire,” he said.

About 50 firefighters from several towns, including New Vineyard, Farmington, North Anson, Kingfield, Strong, Industry and New Portland, responded to the report of fire just after 5 p.m., he said.

When firefighters arrived, flames were showing from the second floor, Churchill said.

The owner, a man from Massachusetts, uses the 100-plus-year-old farmhouse as a weekend getaway, Churchill said. He did not have his name readily available Friday.

A friend of the owner arrived at the house about 90 minutes before the fire was reported, he said, and got the wood stove going for heat. An attempt to put out the fire before firefighters arrived was unsuccessful.

A passer-by on the road, also known as Route 234, reported the fire, he said.

The blaze gutted the second story, and there was smoke, water and other damage on the first floor, where the fire was kept contained, he said.

An attached shed and barn were spared, he said.

“We had to shuttle water from the center of town,” Churchill said.

The property is insured.
