Authorities in Cumberland County are investigating a Friday night fight in Harpswell involving six to eight people and allegedly a knife and a tire iron.

According to Capt. Jeff Davis of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the department responded Friday night just after 11 p.m. with officers from the Brunswick Police Department to the area around Allen Point Road for a reported fight involving several people.

When Deputy George Bradbury arrived on the scene, he was met by a large group. He found an injured Andre R. Lopez, 22, of 5 Oak St., Brunswick, who allegedly had been hit on the head with a tire iron. Lopez was transported to Parkview Hospital for treatment of serious, nonlife-threatening injuries.

Davis reported that a second person Joshua Gatto, 19, address unknown, suffered a serious but nonlife-threatening knife cut to his right hand. Gatto was taken to Mid Coast Hospital for treatment.

According to Davis, witnesses at the scene, as well as the victims/suspects, reported that an argument erupted between Gatto and Lopez over a female. Several people became involved through telephone and text conversations with threats being exchanged among friends of both men. The two groups met in the area of Allen Point Road around 11 p.m. Friday. At that time, at least two of the vehicles involved in the incident crashed into one another.

At that point, according to Davis, people got out of the cars and started fighting.

Davis reported that some witnesses alleged that Lopez was armed with a knife as he got out of one of the vehicles. Gatto was allegedly armed with a tire iron as he got out of another vehicle.

Davis reported that the scene was chaotic and confusing because of the number of people involved. A tire iron was recovered from the scene, but a knife was not. Davis said Saturday that the incident remained under investigation and that no charges had been filed.
