Lisbon firefighters work to extricate William Bridgham Jr. from his van on Route 125 near Bowdoin Central School around noon Tuesday. Bridgham’s conversion van accommodated his wheelchair, which made it difficult for rescue crews to cut him out of the vehicle. According to Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department Patrol Sgt. Dale Hamilton, the accident was still under investigation Tuesday, but neither speed nor alcohol was a factor. Bridgham was taken by helicopter to Maine Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries. His service dog was not hurt, but it took a lot of coaxing by a family friend who arrived on the scene to leave his charge and go with someone else.
