WEST GARDINER — Roland D. “Rod” Martin, age 81, of West Gardiner, died unexpectedly at his home Monday, April 4.

He was born in Burdick, Kan., on Aug. 3, 1929, a son of Edward John and Gladys I. (Traner) Martin. He graduated from Alma High School, Alma, Kansas, Class of 1947.

He served in the U.S. Naval Aviation from 1948 to 1970. After retiring from the U.S. Navy, he worked for a private government contractor testing electronic devices for four years, after which he went to work for Bath Iron Works as a power test electrician, from which he retired in 1992.

Mr. Martin was very involved in the Masonic fraternity. He was past master of Ancient York Lodge 155, past patron of Genesta 73 and Mt. Olivet 29 of the Order of the Eastern Star, past watchman of Sheperds, past high priest of Montgomery and St. Bernand 2, past ill. master of Mt. Vernon Council 2, past sovereign eusebius conclave Red Cross of Constantine, past governor of Mt. Katahdin 187 York Rite College, member of the Kora Temple, member of Kora Klowns since 1972, past president of Kora Klowns, Kora ambassador to Rainbow, advisory board member of Lewiston Assembly 14 Order of Rainbow for Girls, and past grand king of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Masons of the state of Maine. He was also involved in several other Masonic affiliated bodies.

Mr. Martin was predeceased by two brothers, Dale E. and Dean E.; and a sister, Twyla E. Wagner.

He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl L. Martin of Sabattus; two grandchildren, Anthony M. Rideout and Micala D. Roy; a sister, Patricia M. Meinhardt of Overland Park, Kan.; and his extended family, Barry and Karolyn Marston and their daughter, Meghan, of Augusta.
