CASTINE — Maine Maritime defeated the University of Maine at Farmington 5-3 and 3-0 in NAC softball action Friday night.

In the top of the sixth inning of the opener, the Beavers (9-15) exploded for three runs with two outs in the inning, but went quietly in the seventh as MMA won the contest 5-3.

In Game 2, the Mariners scored an unearned run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. MMA scored two more runs in the second when Brittany Hunt singled to center, driving in two runs.

Casey McCloskey took care of the rest on the mound for MMA, scattering three hits while striking out six to pick up her 10th win of the season.

Bowdoin 4, Bates 1

LEWISTON — Bowdoin first-year Casey Correa blasted two home runs to lead the Polar Bears to a 4-1 victory over Bates College in softball action Friday afternoon.

Correa had three of Bowdoin’s five hits. First-year Melissa DellaTorre provided another stellar performance by tossing a complete game, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out eight. Following a run-scoring double by Gen Barlow that gave Bowdoin a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Correa hit her first collegiate home run over the right field fence to give the Polar Bears a 3-0 advantage.

The Bobcats were able to get one back on a run-scoring single by Leah Maciejewski in the bottom of the second inning.

Baseball

Trintiy 7, Bates 3

LEWISTON — Joe Papa went 4-for-5 and scored three runs as Trinity College defeated Bates College 7-3 to open a three-game series in baseball action on Friday at Leahey Field.

Bates starter Paul Chiampa pitched eight innings and allowed five runs, only two of which were earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out nine batters.

Trinity got two runs on the board in the fourth inning, as Papa singled and Stephen Rogers walked to set the stage for Mark Young, who doubled home both players.

Bates reached Ben Goldberg for three runs in the ninth inning before he induced Noah Lynd into a game-ending ground out.
