LEWISTON — Ready Read of Lewiston-Auburn is seeking donations of new or gently used children’s books to distribute to families in need in Androscoggin. The group has a goal of collecting 1000 books for needy children as part of its 2011 book drive, from May 6 through May 15.

Books may be dropped off in the designated boxes at Shaw’s Supermarkets (East Avenue in Lewiston and Center Street in Auburn) or Hannaford Supermarkets (Sabattus Street in Lewiston and Center Street in Auburn).

Ready Read is a community wide effort to spread awareness of the benefits of early literacy. Research shows that children who are read to for just 20 minutes a day from birth to age 5 are better prepared when they enter kindergarten.
