Children’s workshop

FARMINGTON — The Franklin County Children’s Task Force will be holding a 1, 2, 3 Magic half-day workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at its office located at 113 Church St.

This workshop is to give parents the tools they need to engage their child in effective disciplining techniques by encouraging positive behavior, independence and self-esteem. The 1, 2, 3 Magic program also helps parents to manage difficult behaviors in children ages 2-12. This workshop includes breakfast and lunch with free childcare provided on-site. Education plan

FARMINGTON — The Franklin County Children’s Task Force is now taking registrations for parents wishing to sign up for “Developing IEP’s: A Step by Step Guide.” The class will take place at the Franklin County Children’s Task Force at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12. Dinner and childcare will be provided. Please call to register at 778-6960.

The Developing IEP’s class will guide parents through the process of supporting their child who receives special education services and/or who has an Individual Education Plan. Participants will leave with the ability to address desired educational outcomes and knowledge of strategies for making the most of the individualized Education Program meetings.

Homemakers meet

INDUSTRY — Clearwater Extension Homemakers members will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at Shorey Chapel Church. The program will be on potholders and wool felting. Everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, call 778-6780.

Science event

ORONO — The 2011 Citizen Science Symposium will be held at the University of Maine on Thursday, May 12 and Friday, May 13. The primary objective of the symposium is to share information about environmental citizen science, where volunteers assist scientists in monitoring and data collection.

The two-day event will conclude with three field trips, including a vernal pool community-monitoring demonstration at the University Forests and a GET WET! (Groundwater Education Through Water Evaluation and Testing) presentation.

Day Group

WILTON — Wilton Day Group met on April 14 with nine members and three guests, who later joined the group. Ann Ibarguen, Doris Cushman and Marcella Farrington were welcomed as new members.

The Franklin County Extension meeting will be in May in Weld. A garden basket will be brought from the group.

The group is planning a bus trip on July 30 to go on a Rockland schooner cruise. Anyone interested may participate.

The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 12, at Jean Rand’s house. The group will be having a brunch.

At the April meeting, Dave Fuller from the UMaine County Extension Office talked about houseplants. A potluck dinner was served.

Dinner canceled

FARMINGTON — A spaghetti dinner to benefit the Darlene Rowe Memorial Gazebo at LEAP’s Oliver House, scheduled for Friday, May 13, at Trinity United Methodist Church, has been canceled. No reschedule date is yet available.

Park cleaning

CANTON — Volunteers are needed to clean up flower beds and for general clean up at Heritage Park on Saturday, May 14, beginning at 9 a.m. Please bring tools. The rain date will be May 21.

Fun festival

FAYETTE — Fayette Fun Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Fayette Central School, Route 17.

Activities include games, inflatable bounce house; “Touch a Truck” area with trucks, tractors and heavy equipment; farm animals; and many demonstrations including jewelry making, ice cream making, arts, crafts and more. Admission: $5 for adults, $3 for children, under 1 free. Unlimited pass for the giant inflatable bounce house combo, $3. Lunch available. Rain date: May 15. Plant sale

WILTON – Tyngtown Club plant sale will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Academy Hill School cafeteria. Choice perennials and annuals, herbs, bake sale, plant books, gently used garden tools and decorative pots for sale. Proceeds benefit Wilton Free Public Library and Wilton Early Childhood Center.

Free luncheon

FARMINGTON — Old South First Congregational Church will serve its monthly free community luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14. The menu for this month includes barbecued chicken, mashed potatoes, coleslaw and cake.

Delivery service will be available in the Farmington area. Call the church office at 778-0424 during the week or the church kitchen at 778-4438 on the morning of the luncheon to have your meal delivered.
